Applications of Nanotechnology in
Biomedical Science
Nanotechnologies are the design,
characterization, production and application of structures,
devices and systems by controlling shape and size usually in
the realm of one to 100 nanometers. Due to their small size
and extremely high ratio of surface area to volume,
nanotechnology materials have great potential for use in a
vast array of products. In the one selected example for
importance of nanotechnology is nanomaterial assisted
sensors. The critical issue in the design of biosensors is
both transducer selection and integration of biological
recognition layer. While differences in this design and
steric hindrance reducing trapping methods require advanced
knowledge, they directly affect performance criteria such as
sensitivity and linearity. While it is aimed to accurately
measure many and very small concentrations of analytes in an
effective disease diagnosis, it is very important to make
accurate determinations about whether a portable or wearable
chemical sensor will be manufactured by thoroughly analyzing
the field requirements. At this point, nanostructures and
nanotechnological principles and knowledge emerge as key
skill. Nanomaterials can be applied in different biomedical
applications like diagnosis, treatment, and drug delivery
due to their unique features. Medical applications of
nanotechnology are expected to be of major benefit to
society. The technology is not only important because of its
social and welfare implications but also because of its
economic potential in biomaterials and medical devices.
However, ethical considerations should be taken into account
when developing nano-technological medical applications.
